American Humane Society

From the American Humane Society Website:
http://www.americanhumane.org/about-us/

Dedicated to protecting both children and animals, American Humane is not affiliated with the Humane Society of the United States, an organization that primarily uses litigation and legislation to promote animal rights. Nor is American Humane a parent organization of local “humane societies” and SPCAs, which are locally based, independent agencies that operate animal shelters and provide animal care and control services to their communities. However, many of those agencies are member organizations of American Humane. As such, they benefit from our trainings, informational and funding resources, and national programs that increase the abilities, knowledge and effectiveness of their organizations and staff.

Dog Teams - Therapy

Delta Pet Partners Program

Quote from website:
"Pet Partners® program
Delta Society's Pet Partners program trains volunteers and screens volunteers and their pets for visiting animal programs in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, schools and other facilities.

The Pet Partners program was established in 1990 to ensure that "both ends of the leash," people as well as animals, were well-prepared to participate in animal-assisted activity and animal-assisted therapy programs. Pet Partners is the only national registry that requires volunteer training and screening of animal-handler teams.

Delta Society's national network links volunteers with facilities in their own communities that request visiting pets and helps Pet Partners contact facilities to begin visits in new locations."

      Humane Society of Northeast FL

112 Norma Street in Hollister, FL
      The shelter & office are staffed 7 days a week from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
      (386) 325-1587

The Palatka Daily News and other local newspapers. Post in the Lost & Found Section.

      Area vets
Your pet may have been injured and taken to one of the local vets.
This happens more in cases where someone hits an animal and feels responsible for it.

2) Visit.
As soon as possible visit all local shelters. What you call a large dog someone else might call medium. Your well groomed pet may have traveled through mud and briars giving it a total different look. How often? Daily to a high-kill shelter is not too often.

3) Post colorful flyers. Put a picture of the pet on it. Reward? Put that on the flyer also.

4) Show your pet's picture around in the community.
Show it to your mailman, the UPS/Fed Ex delivery person if you see one. The more eyes looking for your pet the higher your chance to find your pet.

5) Don't forget that pets travel - either on their own or they may catch a ride with someone. Check surrounding counties and leave your contact info.

Putnam County Shelter Terms

From the Putnam County Website
http://www.putnam-fl.com/bocc/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&...

Public Hurricane Shelters
•Hurricane shelters are a last resort. If you have family, friends or a hotel to go to out of the area, it would be preferable to living in an emergency shelter. The decision to open shelters will depend on the severity of the event as well as local needs.

Special Needs
•If someone has a special medical need, he or she should enroll in the Putnam County Special Needs Registry. The County maintains a resident registry and arranges for transportation and shelter

American Red Cross Hurricane Shelters
•"American Red Cross shelter" is defined as a facility that complies with the American Red Cross Guidelines.

Hurricane Shelters of Refuge
•Places of refuge are structures or buildings intended to accommodate people stranded on regional evacuation routes and unable to reach shelter prior to the onset of hurricane winds. These structures are not guaranteed to be completely safe in strong hurricanes; however, they provide an option that may be better than having people in vehicles on the road during a hurricane or remaining in substandard housing.
